> Total Annihilation Installation Instructions

Installing TA shouldn’t be that hard to do, but the game has its moments. There is a definite sequence to the installation. Most of the Guy Day’ers are using the Commander’s Pack - the 4-CD collection of TA that includes Battle Tactics and Core Contingency. You’ll see below there are two sets of instructions for the installation. The first set of instructions are the install sequence from the CD’s (along with the extra patches). The second set of instructions are the streamlined install instructions. I found these instructions on the Draconius site (see Links on the right).

If you download TADemo files from some of the clan sites, the demo files may not work (shows wrong units, etc). Put this in your TA directory to solve the problem.

Commander’s Pack Installation
1. Install TA (CD 1)
2. Install Battle Tactics
3. Install Core Contingency
4. Apply the 3.1c patch
5. Install the 500 unit patch (place file in your TA directory)

TA Streamlined Install (Draconius)
1. Install TA (CD 1)
2. Apply the 3.1c patch
3. Copy the following files from the add-on CD’s to the TA folder:
    - CCMaps.ccx
    - CCMiss.ccx
    - CCData.ccx
    - BTMaps.ccx
    - BTMiss.ccx
4. Install the 500 unit patch (place file in your TA directory)

Once these steps are complete, launch TA. If your installation is successful, the intro screen for TA will show “v3.1” just below the Total Annihilation banner. If it says “v3.0” instead, there is something wrong with your installation. Verify the steps shown above.

Once you have TA updated correctly with the 3.1c patch, the next update to apply is the TA Recorder. The recorder is a utility that allows you to record TA games and replay your TA games. This is a must-have utility for analyzing how the game is being played.

Download the TA Recorder here.

Other optional - There are six Cavedog expansion units that are considered part of the base game: Download these, double-click and install them into your TA directory..

> Network / Multi-player Instructions

One of the biggest headaches in getting together for a TA game is getting everyone set up to be able to connect to the game. In internet play, with everyone behind a firewall, it seems that there are always issues. Invariably, one or more Guys will have trouble - can’t see the game, can’t join the battle room, etc.

Searching the internet for help on setting up TA. The most consistent instruction is that the following ports need to be open and forwarded from your router to your PC:

    2300-2400 (TCP/UDP inbound/outbound),
    28800-29000 (inbound/outbound)
    47624 (TCP inbound/outbound)

The Draconius site has a very clear set of instructions on setting the router to forward the appropriate ports. (Click here)

Other important notes

Whether coincidence or not, the following seems to help with some of the technical glitches in getting a TA game started. Before starting a new game:
    - Turn off the PC
    - Restart the modem
    - Turn on the PC
    - If the PC is behind a router, make sure that the router is forwarding to your PC.
(Do this by Start>Run>CMD. Then type ipconfig
the ip address of your computer should match the router port forwarding)
    - Start TA (for direct internet game) or Start Gamespy.
